Staircase Chandelier Size Guide

Architect-level guidance for selecting the right chandelier size, drop and position for a staircase or double-height void.

A staircase chandelier should be scaled to the full vertical volume, not only the visible ceiling height. The correct size depends on the void width, ceiling height, viewing angle, landing clearance, staircase shape and the visual weight of the chandelier itself.

Measure the Full Drop Zone

Measure from the ceiling or fixing point to the lowest safe point above stairs, landing or furniture. In most luxury residential projects, the chandelier should sit low enough to fill the void but high enough to preserve circulation, sightlines and maintenance access.

Check Width and Visual Weight

For narrow staircases, a slimmer pendant or vertical cluster often works better than a wide chandelier. For broad entrance halls or double-height voids, a larger multi-tier chandelier may be required to avoid looking underscaled.

Allow for Clearance

• Keep clear of stair traffic, landings and doors.
• Check the view from the entrance, upper landing and adjacent rooms.
• Confirm ceiling fixing, canopy size and installer access before ordering.
