Can You Put Luxury Lights in the Bathroom? The Answer is Yes!

When we hear the words luxury lighting, the first thing that comes to mind is a grand chandelier in the foyer, wall lights in the living room, and pendant lights in the dining area. But what about installing luxury lights in the bathroom? Can it be done? The answer is a resounding yes!

A well-designed and sophisticated bathroom should have excellent lighting to achieve the right ambiance and level of comfort. However, it is important to also consider the appropriate safety measures before choosing any lights for the bathroom. There are strict regulations regarding the types of lights you can use in bathrooms and where they can be placed. In this blog post, we'll discuss how luxury lights can transform your bathroom into a luxurious and intimate space, as well as discussing important safety considerations.

Types of Luxury Bathroom Lights

Bathroom lighting has come a long way from being merely functional. It is now a design element that adds warmth and personality to your bathroom décor. And, there are many different luxury bathroom light options to choose from:

  • Wall Lights - Wall lights are an excellent choice if you want to achieve a luxurious, hotel-like bathroom. You can install them on either side of the vanity mirror or above. Wall lights come in different shapes and designs that can fit any bathroom theme or style. If you have a contemporary bathroom, choose geometric or sleek designs. For a more traditional look, choose bathroom wall lights with brass or gold finishes.
  • Pendant Lights - Pendant lights are a stylish and elegant way to light up your bathroom. They can add a touch of sophistication and glamour to an otherwise mundane space. Pendant lights work best in larger bathrooms, where you have enough space above the vanity or even the bathtub. You can choose from glass, crystal, or metal, depending on your style preferences. Installing pendant lights in the bathroom is a great way to bring personality and class to a room that is often overlooked.
  • Chandeliers - Who says chandeliers only belong in dining rooms and above the stairs? The truth is, chandeliers can also work wonders in the bathroom. They can provide ambient lighting and make anyone who enters your bathroom go "wow." If you have a spacious bathroom that can accommodate a chandelier, go for it! Choose something that will complement your bathroom's design and aesthetic.
  • Ceiling Lights - Luxury ceiling lights are perfect for general lighting, and they add an element of sophistication and style that can completely transform the look of any bathroom. Not only do these lights provide ample illumination for grooming and other daily tasks, but they also serve as a decorative element that can set the tone for the entire aesthetic of the space. The right ceiling light can transform a basic bathroom into a spa-like oasis.

Consider your bathroom layout

Before selecting any lighting options, it's important to consider the layout of your bathroom. Identify areas where you will need task lighting, such as over the mirror and near the shower area. Also, think about the kind of atmosphere you want to create in your bathroom. A well-lit bathroom with plenty of ambient light can create a luxurious hotel-like feel.

Safety Considerations

One of the most important elements to consider when adding luxury lighting to a bathroom is that it is installed at a safe distance from the water source to avoid electrical hazards.

There are strict regulations regarding what types of lights can be installed in a bathroom, and where they can be placed. A bathroom is divided into zones for lighting purposes. Each zone is determined by water exposure, and how much water protection a light fixture installed there needs to have. When purchasing a light for the bathroom, you need to ensure that you select a light fitting with the correct IP rating for the bathroom zone in which it’s going to be placed in. IP (or ‘Ingress” or “International Protection” as they are commonly known) ratings are used to define the level of protection offered against intrusion with electrical enclosures.

  • Zone 0 – Zone 0 is in the bath or shower cubicle. Any fitting used in this zone needs to be entirely waterproof (be rated at least IP67) and must have a very low voltage (maximum 12v).
  • Zone 1 – This is the space up to 2.25 metres above the bath or shower from the floor. Although IP65 is recommended, a minimum level of IP45 is necessary in this zone.
  • Zone 2 – Zone 2 is a space that extends 0.6 metres outside the bath’s perimeter and rises 2.25m above the ground. An IP rating of at least IP44 is necessary in this zone. Additionally, it is good practice to consider the area around the washbasin to also be in Zone 2 when it is within a 60cm radius of any tap.
  • Outside Zones – Anywhere outside Zones 0, 1, and 2 (subject to certain restrictions) and where it is likely that no water jet will be used is considered Outside Zones. Although there are no specific IP requirements in this area, it is advised that you install lights with a least an IP20+ rating.

Important Note: This information is just a guide, and you must always reference the IET Wiring Regulations – 18th Edition before choosing bathroom lighting. You should also consult a qualified electrician before installing any lighting into your bathroom.
